Talking ’bout my generation

I’ve always half complained about the fact that I really don’t have a generation. To young for Gen X and too old to be a Millennial. But then my sister (by way of my mom) sent me this article about my generation. Turns out I wasn’t alone in my feelings of not belonging anywhere, I’m actually in a weird mini-generation of people who were born during Jimmy Carter’s presidency (January of 1977 through January of 1981). And the best part? I’m in Generation Catalano (as in the one and the only Jordan Catalano). So this article paired with the fact that My So-Called Life is on Netflix streaming lead me to the conclusion that I needed to post a little something about this show that only lasted a season but ended up sort of defining my generation.

Was there ever a more quintessential teenage girl than Angela Chase? Uhoh, now ALL I want to do is place myself firmly on the couch and watch the entirety of this show (preferably with a blanket and snacks). Why must I be an “adult” with a (few) “responsibilities?” Life can be so unfair.

inspiration folder: diners

There’s something so comforting and soul satisfying about a good ol’ fashioned no frills diner. I think the chill in the air has me craving the coziness of squeezing into a booth. It’s a nice escape from the cold. I love the never ending cups of hot, cheap coffee or if I’m feeling frisky, a delicious black and white shake. And there are a precious few things in the world that I love more than a perfectly made diner BLT. So. Anybody free for lunch?

For no particular reason other than I got home from work early, I decided to watch the Felicity pilot last night. (it’s on netflix streaming) And I was reminded of my deep, all-encompassing love for that show. Keri Russel will always be one of my girl crushes, she is so darn pretty. Remember that haircut?! And the whole Noel/Ben debacle? Sheesh, that was a difficult decision. I mean Ben is so insanely good looking that it hurts your eyes but Noel had this endearing geeky-awkward quality that I’m rather fond of. I understood why Felicity had such a hard time choosing. So, I was thinking of getting rid of netflix but now I have a new short term life goal: re-watch the entire series, laugh, cry and feel old (this show premiered in 1998 – that’s 13 years ago). So, did you love this show as much as I? And more importantly where did you fell on the Noel or Ben debate?

Inspiration Folder: fortune cookie fortunes

I actually don’t eat that much chinese food (more of a thai girl) which is a shame because fortune cookies are one of life’s great joys. I mean the cookies are fine, passable. But the real excitement comes from reading that little piece of paper and seeing what wisdom the fortune cookie gods have bestowed one you. Here’s a wee smattering of fortunes for us to enjoy. And btw, do you play the “in bed” game? Where you add “in bed” to end of your fortune? I find it a little cheesy. “You are heading for a land of sunshine in bed…” “In a gentle way you can shake the world in bed…” Alright, so maybe it’s kinda fun.

Inspiration Folder: Sky Lanterns

While we were up at the lake we tried sky lanterns. I’d seen them before on TV and in the movies but I’d never actually done one myself. We lit them from the boat out in the middle of the lake. It’s very peaceful and beautiful to watch these paper lanterns slowly float up into the starry sky. We were even cheering each lantern on, hoping he/she(?) would make it higher. Wiki tells me that “it is considered good luck to release a sky lantern, and some Thais believe they are symbolic of problems and worries floating away.” This makes total sense because watching each of the lanterns float away was inspirational and centering. These could be a form of therapy. It was hard to think about anything else but that moment, right then. Pretty awesome stuff, my friends.

Inspiration Folder: Swimming Pools

It’s supposed to get up to 95 today in NYC. And 98 tomorrow. It’s just the beginning of June, people! The good news is I procured an AC so at least I’ll have a few cooling breezes to soothe my soul. But let’s be honest, when it’s that hot the only way to truly cool off is to go for a swim. And that’s one of the things I hate most about New York, no swimming pool for me jump into. So today I’m crafting an homage to the swimming pool, it’s my absolute favorite place to be during the summer. Stay cool, pals.
