And the nominees are…

I’m kind of an Oscar nerd. I’ll openly admit that. And every year I say I am going to see all of the best picture nominees but I usually get distracted (oh! something shiny!) or just lose steam. But, I am ever the optimist, and I think this could be the year! The way I see it I have already seen three of the nominated movies (not the check marks below), and two are easily watchable at home via iTunes (Midnight in Paris and Tree of Life) so that leaves four that I’d have to go to the theater and see (The Artist, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Hugo and War Horse). I think I can do it, I really do! I’m feeling it this year. Which of the nominees have you seen? And don’t forget to keep an eye out for The Second Annual Old Sweet Song Oscar Pool which I’ll be organizing in a few weeks. That way we can all geek out over the Academy Awards together.

File this under things I want: sexy, throw-back, ultra thick black eyeliner à la Adele. And while we’re at it I’ll take her messy hot “I probably just got laid” hair and that amazing voice as well. Whatever, she’s just awesome and I kind of want to marry her.

Do y’all ever rock the cat eyes? I do a modified version for the every day but I think I need to attempt the real deal. Here’s a tutorial from the hairpin and one from cupcakes and cashmere. Maybe I’ll bust it out for my date this Friday. What do you think?

For no particular reason, I started thinking about the awesomeness of duets. And how some of them have a little bit of romantic cheesiness, which this lady happens to adore. Today’s artist crush is someone I met through a common friend earlier this year. She was visiting New York and we went out to dinner and drank wine and we got along wonderfully. She lives on the other side of the country BUT we have become facebook/interweb pals. And I was delighted when she started her blog I draw something everyday. I was blown away but her talents and I love her style. I just adore people who make pretty things. Now, you must bookmark and follow this cool lady immediately, you won’t be sorry.

Paper Crush: Farewell Paperie

I first met Lisa and Jen, the lovely ladies behind Farewell Paperie, last March at my friend Molly‘s wedding. We were seated at the same table and immediately had tons to talk about. Besides a love of all things design and paper related, we also share a common background in advertising. Needless to say, we hit it off immediately. And then last week I received this adorable card in the mail from Jen congratulating me on the pounds that I’ve recently shed. It was such a fantastically sweet gesture. Don’t you just love those little surprises that catch you off guard and make you smile? So thank you, Jen. I’m thinking this is a gentle nudge from the universe reminding me (and by proxy all of you) to send a little card to someone who doesn’t expect it. Let’s all do it, shall we? I don’t know what it is, maybe it was the wild new “I’m single” red lipstick I procured or maybe it was AB’s new red screen door. But for some reason, I have red on the brain. Is there anything better than a little unexpected pop of classic, bold, sexy-as-hell red? Jeez! Don’t answer that, it’s rhetorical.

For some reason (most likely the chilly weather coupled with my recent breakup) I find I really want to get cozy on the couch with a textile-y pleasing throw blanket, something good to read and a nice mug full of something warm and delectable.
