This Could Be My Year

Every year it’s the same thing. I talk big and say I’m going to see every Oscar nominated movie and I always fall short. And by the way, this is a feat that has gotten much more difficult since they upped the number of possible nominees. There’s a big difference between nine and five. So far here’s how things are looking for yours truly:

Done and done: Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Les Miserablés, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty. (Not too shabby, eh?)

I understand if you’re not all about the whole seeing-every-nomination-Oscars-thing. But I have to say Argo was just plain great entertainment. And I saw Silver Linings Playbook yesterday (on a date!) and I really loved it. So, at the very least I’d recommend those two. Plus I have a crush on Ben Affleck (who doesn’t?!) and wouldn’t mind seeing him win an Oscar (although it would be decidedly less adorable than when he Matt Damon won for Good Will Hunting).

Now tell me, which ones have you seen? Any early favorites? Has anyone seen Lincoln? I feel like I should see it but it kind of feels like homework. But I’ll try to gather the strength and gumption. Because really, this could be the year that I see ‘em all. And maybe this is the year I finally have an Oscars viewing party.

Time will tell.

I’ve seen Les Mis (liked it) and Django (loved it). Django is probably my favorite Tarantino movie, and that’s saying a lot.

Haven’t yet seen Argo or Lincoln but I want to. On the fence about Silver Linings Playbook.

I wish I wanted to see Zero Dark Thirty, but I’m pretty sure it would give me a panic attack. I don’t do well with Afghan war movies. Not sure why.

@Allison – For what it’s worth, I really loved both Argo and Silver Linings! And you’ve convinced me that Django should be my next stop.

This is the first year – ever – that I haven’t seen ONE single Oscar film. Since entering adulthood, I’ve seen EVERY single film in the major categories. Even the foreign films! It was a traditional I held with my mother and it is fond memories there.

But this year – I have failed the memories and myself. I hope to see at two before the ceremony. Parenthood has apparently taken the cinema viewing right out of me!

@Nicole – Very impressed with your Oscar preparedness of yesteryear. I always hear that movies are the first thing to go from new parents! Alas, I hope you get to see them two movies you speak of. And I hope one is Argo!

Argo is on our top list, with Django and Silver Linings. Here’s hoping!

@Nicole – Ohhhh maybe you can do all three. I still need to see Django. I’ll join y’all. (wink emoticon)

I haven’t had the chance to see any yet, but I’m dying to see Lincoln, les Mis, and Silver Linings Playbook!

I’ve seen all the ones you have thus far – no real interest in Lincoln, Django Unchained or Life of Pi, and I just don’t think I’ll get around to seeing Amour in the theater. I just don’t get the Silver Linings Playbook hype; it ended and I went “wait, why is that nominated?” Saw Zero Dark Thirty on Saturday and was blown away; that one’s my vote, but I don’t think it’ll win. Flight comes out on Redbox tomorrow, so that’s probably my next movie, although it only counts for best actor (which DDL has locked up). Saw The Impossible last weekend and thought Naomi Watts was incredible, but she still doesn’t stand a chance against Anne Hathaway.

@Karen – I LOVED Silver Linings Playbook. Like seriously a lot. And I did end up seeing Django Unchained which was good but so, so, so, so violent. I’m going to try and muster the strength to see Lincoln. I don’t care about Life of Pi either AND Amour probably ain’t in the cards for me. Let’s be honest.

I still want to see Flight. Even though Denzel has no chance whatsoever.
