Chalkboard Quote 03

Posted on | October 15, 2012 | 9 Comments

Hi friends. I chose a travel themed quote this week for two reasons. One, I love to travel but then again who doesn’t? And, more specifically, I am heading out of town to Portland tomorrow. Oregon that is. I’ve never been so I’m taking my mom on a belated birthday trip. I love the idea of picking a cool, new town and just going and exploring. That’s our plan, anyways. I’m not a very scheduled traveller. I’m really not a very scheduled person, I guess. But I believe strongly that trips should be loose and relaxed and fun and leave plenty of time for wandering and resting and just enjoying the location and the people you’re with.

Seeing as it’s my first time there, though, if you have any recommendations I would absolutely love to hear them.

Great quote, and I am all about the travel theme! I’ve been to Portland once, for about ten days. Somehow it was a glorious time despite the fact that it rained constantly! The parks are all fantastic- Forest Park, Mt. Tabor Park, the Japanese & International Rose Garden, etc. I remember a particularly satisfying lunch of pad thai from a food truck, and of course now those have become the Hot New Thing :) There’s TONS of great restaurants and brew pubs, and I even went to an interactive showing of the Mary Poppins film, a la Rocky Horror. So much fun!

    Have a good time!

Just make sure you have oysters and lots of wine! The Portland art museum is wonderful, and Weiden + Kennedy is beautiful, even if you just walk by. The doors are huge and feel really significant and amazing just to stand near if you’re an ad geek :) . Voodoo Donuts is also amazing! Have tons of fun!

Thanks ladies! I’m thinking this is going to be a food themed trip? Which just happens to my favorite kind (with copious amounts of wine, as well. But that goes without saying).

Amazing quote! Enjoy Portland! I always love using my birthday as an excuse to take a trip, even if it’s only to the next town over.

OMG. Seth’s mom lives in Portland and all we do is eat when we go there. Ok: best dessert ever is Pix; there are 2 of them. They have wine, too. If they have the chocolate bleu cheese ice cream, get it. It sounds so gross, but is amazing.

My favorite tapas place: El Toro Bravo. It gets super crowded and I dont think they take reservations, so if you go, my suggestion is to get there super early.

I can’t remember the names of anywhere else. Will consult w Seth and report back. So stoked for you. I love Portland. We have a plan to move there in the next few years.

Be sure to pack a rain jacket — fall has moved in! The grey skies only make the autumn leaves stand out even more though. Will you be here long? Are you staying downtown? The Alphabet District is fun to walk around on and full of great restaurants (Elephant’s Deli, Cafe Mingo, Jo Bar, Sorrento) and cafes (we love Stumptown!). Be sure to wander the Park Blocks too or walk along the waterfront.

On the east side there’s Alberta & Mississippi Streets (hipster central) and Hawthorne (like Haight/Ashbury, but on a smaller scale).

Once you land you can take the Max light rail train straight from the airport to just about anywhere you’re going.

Of course, you can’t miss Powell’s Books!

Hope you have fun in Portland with your mom!

Yes to Powell’s Books, yes to Stumptown coffee, ABSOLUTELY!!!
Now, I am not a huge fan of Voodoo Donuts, but might as well try them at least once.

I would also go to Pine State biscuits. They’re simple breakfast food, nothing fancy, but very very very tasty! http://www.pinestatebiscuits.com

The rain has arrived to the PNW, so bring a rain jacket or umbrella and some warm clothes. Hopefully you will get some clear skies though! Today, for example, is lovely :)

The rose garden might not have many roses left at this point, but it is still a neat place to walk around. Check out the food trucks, and walk around the downtown area (Portland’s living room!)

There are plenty of things to see, it is a very cool city. I doubt you will, but if you happen to get bored though, come to my town: Seattle! :D
