The World Is My Oyster

Posted on | June 13, 2012 | 13 Comments

It’s been in the last year or so that I’ve become a real oyster fan. An oyster enthusiast even. For years they grossed me out. But now, I can’t get enough of them. They are so much fun to order in a restaurant. I love the ritual of it all. And come on, that is one sexy food item. And, they’re low in calories so you can feel better about pairing them with a bottle (or two) of rosé.

What about y’all? What are your thoughts on raw oysters? I’ve always found it to be on of those devisive love-or-hate issues. And I’m declaring it here and now, I am firmly and passionately 100% pro-raw oyster.

p.s. Even though I love them, I’ve still yet to shuck my own. I need to get on that stat. Instructions here.

I might know someone who can teach you to shuck…

Being Portuguese and living on the coast where my parents pick oysters every chance they get, I them. But it’s been a slow love. Only in the last few years have I started to love them, and only how my dad does them – BBQ’d to perfection.

Love, love, love. But I will say—we learned how to shuck them last year (in a fit of inspiration) and honestly, it’s more trouble than it’s worth, especially since you can have the guys at Lobster Place in Chelsea Market shuck ‘em for you. Since then, our oyster knife has been untouched.

    @Marty – I miss him.

@Tan – I also love roasted. Dipped in tons of butter, obvie.

@Smith & Ratliff – Oh man. If Y’ALL won’t do it, there’s no way I ever will! So maybe I’ll continue along my path of happily having other people shuck them for me.

@Marty – Are we still talking about oysters here?

The real question is: Do you chew them first or slurp them down all at once?

LOVE, ever since a wee child. And I blame/thank you for my current exploration into the Rose.

@Deanna – Marty and I used to frequent a bar that served raw oysters and there was a (WEIRD) man who was employed there and shucked oysters. We named him Shuckles. Obviously.

@Karen – I welcome you with open arms to your new life of pink wine!

Yes! I was raised on them, so I love them. Now this is what I want for dinner, rosé included.

I was totally not into it when I was younger, but now I love their briney taste! I love getting oyster shooters at a local restaurant in Portland, OR. Bloody mary mix w/ an oyster in a shot glass. Yum!

@natailie – If you DIDN’T have rosé I’ll be very disappointed.

@Connie – As a bloody mary devotee, I will have to try one of those.

I recently had oysters poached in oxtail at a restaurant and I swear, I think my eyes rolled back into my head.

    They were THAT good.

Yum. It’s 10.39am here and I want them now!

I have yet to try them. I had the chance but I was too chicken (and had my own gigatic shrimps in garlic-parsley sause).

Buuuuut…How did the blind date go, I’m dying to know:)

YAY! My dad always takes us to eat oysters when we’re on family vacation near an ocean. It’s definitely much more about the overall experience vs. the actual taste of the oysters (it’s good but not as great as the memories made while eating them).
