The Dating Files: kissing

Posted on | March 9, 2012 | 12 Comments

Let me start off by saying. I love to kiss. Actually, I should be more specific; I love making out. It’s a favorite activity of mine. Okay, now that that is out of the way…

There are lots of important things to consider when navigating the waters of the dating world. Is he nice? Funny? Smart? Employed? But it is my belief that one of the most crucial things to consider is the quality of the first kiss. And I should let it be known that I am a wait and be kissed kind of girl. I’m all for sending out “kiss me, you idiot” signals. But when it comes right down to leaning in for the kill, sorry boys but you’ll have to take care of that one. In fact, I can’t recall a time I ever made the first move. *Cue some random ex emailing me to call bullshit.

I hate to put such a crazy amount of weight onto a single kiss but the truth is there’s a lot of vital information in that first kiss. Such as, and perhaps most importantly, do I want to kiss them again. Because if the first kiss is no good, there’s really no coming back form that. Right? I mean yes, it takes a little while to fully mesh kissing styles. But you can tell within a few seconds if you’re compatible or not. And if you’re not, it’s pretty terrible. But if that first kiss is good. And the chemistry is there. And you want to kiss them again (and again and again). Well, there’s really nothing better.

p.s. I went out with a guy who quoted this to me before he went in for the kiss. It was a slightly terrifying. And then he went crazy and wouldn’t stop texting me. Hooray dating!

p.p.s. Have you ever made the first move? And does everyone put as much weight into the first kiss as I do?

p.p.p.s. Happy Friday! My advice for the weekend is to do some good ol’ fashioned makin’ out.

I think a first kiss is SO wildly important. Kissing in general is. Every relationship that’s started on a lame first kiss has been lame. And the good ones? They were nice (at least for some time). And I’m with you about a guy making the first move. That said, the last first kiss I had was pretty freakin good (why am I not dating that guy?).

My first kiss with my husband was awkward, because he was walking me to my car on a third date. We still hadn’t kissed and it was clear that it was high time. I don’t know who leaned in first, but it was awkward because I was so nervous. It had been a long time since I kissed someone without several drinks in me first. That’s what happens when one decides to stop meeting people in bars. But there was chemistry. But the second kiss… I still ask him if he remembers it. Pretty much the best kiss of my entire life. Again, it’s not clear who leaned in first.

I totally guessed this week would be first kisses!

And the Gone with the Wind line? Totally creepy.

@Brandi – Glad you agree. And is the most recent kiss you speak of the one we discussed before Sleep No More? If so, I need an offline update.

@melissa – Love that. And there can be chemistry in the awkwardness. And yes, totally creepy.

I’m with you, I don’t make the first move! That’s all on the guy. And in the case of my fiance, that meant waiting some time…but it was so worth it. We actually were on a date, watching a movie in my apartment and after the movie and some chatting he left (with just a hug). 10 minutes later I hear a knock on my door, I open it and there he is. He said “I forgot something” and then leaned in a planted a perfectly sweet and slightly nervous kiss on my lips. So adorable!

On the other hand, my H.S. relationship which was awkward and weird, started with a very awkward and toad-like kiss. So, yeah, I think first kisses definitely set the tone for our relationships. If the chemistry isn’t there, it probably won’t be.

Oh- I’ve taught lots of guys how to kiss, haha, kind of joking.. I’ll give them pointers though for sure. And several times we have come full circle to them being the best kissers. Anyway… at this point I am abstaining, until I meet the right one. :)

I definitely made the first move when I kissed my now-husband on our first date. That whole thing turned out o.k. :)

confession: the first time i kissed my husband i literally thought “hmm, we’re going to have to work on this”. our kissing styles may have started off differently, but after a few hours, i mean dates!! of making out, things became much more cohesive.

as long as the chemistry is there, the technique can always be mastered. :)

also, technically we actually “dated” for 2 whole months in junior high and i was his first kiss ever! but our first real grown up dating kiss (the “we’re going to have to work on this” one) wasn’t until we met up again in college.

I’m getting hitched in the woods (barring any totally horrific weather) in a mere 4 weeks.
Our first date was a mountain bike ride followed by burgers and beers…
In the parking lot as we walked to our cars, I said, “Would it be weird if I kissed you?”
Without waiting for a reply, I pretty much pounced…we kissed,I fled and we haven’t spent a day apart since.
