Treasure Hunt: A Retro Bathing Suit
Posted on | April 7, 2010 | 16 Comments
Guess what? While I was away in Vegas it seems that spring has sprung in New York City. The warm weather plus the heated pool in Vegas that I didn’t get to use got me thinking, I desperately need a new bathing suit. Mine is basically falling apart and is pretty indecent. So I’m channeling Marilyn Monroe and on the hunt for a cute retro one piece. I scoured the interwebs and here are my findings. I’m a curvier gal so I didn’t post anything that isn’t available in my size. Also because of said “curviness” I’m tempted to go for basic black (there’s no arguing with it’s ability to flatter) but a color or polka dot would be fun.

My Findings:
1) Tommy Bahama ‘Midnight Pearl’ One Piece Halter Swimsuit,
2) Esther Williams 50′s Style Pin Up Black Polka Dot Bathing Suit
3) Lands’ End Women’s All-over Control Slender Tunic Swimsuit
4) Merona Bandeau Shirred One Piece
5) Women’s Regular Beach Living Adjustable Tunic Swim Top
6) Jantzen Vamp One Piece Bathing Suit
7) Oceanside Skirted One Piece
8) Women’s Plus Size Merona One Piece Swimsuit
9) Oceanside Skirted One Piece

Cute!
I’ve got a black Esther Williams and it is PERFECTION. I think I’m going to get a white one next. The fit is great & it does wonderful things for my (not super tiny) body. It celebrates your curves in just the right ways. (I feel pretty cheesy saying it that way, but it was the only way I could think of that really expressed what I meant.)

I think the bottom row, middle suit is the most true to Marilyn’s. But polka dots would be cute!

My favorites are the black and brown polka dots (#2 and #6)!
I desperately want a cute, retro-styled suit but I’ll be stuck in maternity (i.e. big fat whale) for the summer
Allow me to live through you!

I think patterns do wonders for hiding “things”. Also, look up Freya brand. They make bras and swimsuits for us busty gals.

i vote for the plain brown (#1) and the brown polka dots (#6). The rest are super cute too but those are my faves.

I have a black one that’s really similar to the Esther Williams one and I love it. Super cute and flattering.

Thank you for doing this, because this is just the kind of bathing suit I need and I did not feel like adding this to my to do list! Swimsuit shopping is the worst, isn’t it?! You’ve made it so much easier. I love that brown and white polka dot one!!

My favorite is the Jantzen Vamp One Piece Bathing Suit – classic, sexy, cute! Plus it’s got polka dots and ruffles – two for one

Know any stores in NYC to get suits like these? (I love these!) I prefer trying things on rather than buying online.
