Let’s talk about chalk(boards)

I love doodling, it’s true. They’re not always pretty but I enjoy drawing mindlessly. I think a huge (and I mean HUGE) chalkboard in our living room would be pretty awesome. I know they’re a little played out, but what do I care? They’re so fun and casual and a little unexpected. I could doodle away when I felt like it and it would be a nice, ever changing focal point. I want a really big one though so I might be making it myself. I’m trolling around the interwebs (aka Apartment Therapy) for inspiration though…

I love it in a kitchen, mine is too wee though.

A chalkboard accent wall looks pretty great, but I don’t have an accent wall.

Green is fun and grade school nostalgic.

Now this is cool. I want this but it would just lean (or hang?) up against the exposed brick wall behind our couch. I think I could make something similar with wood and chalkboard paint. Also note that the lil’ birdie is saying “Welcome Amy,” so I’ll take that as a sign.

Or, screw the whole chalky mess and go with dry erase paint?
What are your thoughts, I do sense an overwhelming painting project coming on (sorry Anthony).

fun! i think big and bold and leaning would work just fine! and since you asked for our thoughts, i might as well tell you that a dry-erase wall gives me serious creeps. remember how those things smelled? ok, sorry. enough from me.

There is such a thing as chalkboard paint too. Probably a lot cheaper than buying a huge chalkboard… http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=103
Although you say your kitchen is too small, it might be fun to do it in the space between the countertop and cabinets like this chick did: http://taza-and-husband.blogspot.com/2009/06/and-then-he-cooked-me-homemade-meal-and.html
just some ideas. good luck with whatever you decide to do!

How cool. Thanks for the round-up: I’d never seen this many options at once. I like the idea that Shelly posted — Naomi (Taza) just completed a pretty cool kitchen funkification, and I think she used just the right amount of chalkboard paint in just the right places.

love the idea of making a huge one and putting it behind the couch! all hail chalkboard paint!
as for the whiteboard paint, we’re about to experiment with it in the office, so i’ll let you know how that goes.

I like the whiteboard look although it is true the dry erase markers have an odd smell. The chalkboard paint is pretty expensive but we painted it on the front of the Sub Zero fridge at Euclid Ave and it worked well. I can’t wait to see what you decide to do.

Love the look of a black chalkboard. Not too keen on the clean up though.

I love the kitchen, and the board above the bed in a frame, and the green one with the books drawn in. This is a really great idea!

Oh, the chalkboard and paint are both such great ideas! Dare I suggest trying both…?

I like the chalkboards but above the bed? I wouldn’t want chalkdust on my pillow…

[...] I like, menu planning, little love sentiments for Anthony, etc. And a ready to hang one beats a huge undertaking like these that I was foolishly thinking about trying to complete. So, this little cutie (from this [...]
